What is the gastric balloon and how does it work?
The gastric balloon is a soft silicone balloon that is simply placed through the mouth into the stomach. It involves no cutting and no surgery. The balloon is inflated with fluid which allows a person to feel full and eat less, therefore jump starting their weight loss.
Is the procedure painful?
Not at all, you will be provided short acting sedation so you wont feel a thing. The procedure itself only takes 15-20 min to insert and you will be discharged the same day.
How Long Does the balloon stay in?
The balloon is designed to stay in for 6 months and removed by a scope which does not require surgery and takes approx 15-20 min.
How Much weight will I lose?
The balloon allows you to lose 20-60 lbs without surgery, it is a jump start to losing weight. Some patients have lost up to 90 lbs. It is in conjunction with a lifestyle change and mindful habits. Most patients lose up to 10 lbs in 1 week and approx 15-20 lbs by 4 weeks so the weight comes off pretty steadily.
What Kind of Support will I receive?
A patient will have 1 year unlimited support with the jump6 team including , a fully trained bariatric surgeon, Naturopathic Doctors, Nurses and Registered Dietician. There is no shortage of support and it is unlimited. The team at jump6 is passionate about helping others reach their weight loss potential.
Where is the procedure performed?
Jump6 has 2 locations within the GTA area. We offer a hospital setting located 15 min from Down town. Another option for patients is a convenient West end location where weekend appointments are available. Jump6 also has locations within the U.S so whether you are Canadian or an American citizen jump6 can help you get started.
What are the side effects of the balloon?
The expected side effects of the balloon are generally feeling of nausea, cramping, and acid reflux which generally only last 2-4 days and subside gradually. The Doctor will provide you a prescription so these side effects can be managed.
Is there any dietary restrictions after the balloon is inserted?
The good news is you will finally feel full! For the first few days food will be the last thing on your mind! You will be provided a helpful guideline of food selections for the first few days after the balloon is inserted. Remember you will not be able to eat the same amount of food so take it slow but gradually you can go back to eating regular food . You will be provided guidance from your Registered Dietician.
Is there any physical restriction?
The good news is no ..there is no physical restriction. We encourage you to take on some form of physical activity, weather it be walking, hiking, biking, swimming, or yoga. You don’t necessarily need an expensive gym membership but it always helps to get moving! Also because this is a non surgical procedure you don’t have to wait weeks to get back in the gym. There are no incisions to heal and no soreness so get to it!
Is it safe to fly with a Gastric balloon?
Yes absolutely. The balloon is simply made of silicone so it is safe to fly. There is no metal in your balloon so don’t worry about the airport metal detectors. You are good to go.
What if the balloon leaks or pops?
The balloon is filled with blue dye…completely safe for your body so if you do have a leak in your balloon you will have a blue urine or blue stool. Not to worry, simply contact jump6 and you will be booked to have the balloon removed within a few days and a new balloon will be inserted at no charge. This is rare and not something generally to worry about.
Will I gain weight when the balloon is removed?
With the support of the jump6 weight loss team we will keep you motivated and on track. Studies show that there is a less than 10 lbs weight gain in a 2 year period. Most of the time when a patient loses weight they generally refrain from going back to their old habits. Its a lot about moderation and staying focused on why you started the journey in the first place.
Is the balloon procedure affordable?

How Do I get started?
The first step is contacting a patient care coordinator to ensure you are a good candidate. The general BMI requirement is 26 and up.
